Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a referral to see a specialist. Your doctor should send you to an oncologist to get treatment for prostate cancer.

  2. Step 2

Find out if you need radiation therapy to treat the cancer. Traditional radiation therapies as well as newer methods are used for prostate cancer. One method involves implanting a radioactive seed into the prostate.

  3. Step 3

Take hormones to stop the cancer from spreading. Your doctor may want to use hormones to stop the body from producing testosterone. Testosterone can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer.

  4. Step 4

Undergo surgery if recommended. If the cancer is found only in your prostate gland, the doctor may recommend that the gland be completely removed.

  5. Step 5

Receive follow up care. You may have several complications following treatment for prostate cancer, including impotence or incontinence.

  6. Step 6

Maintain a healthy lifestyle during treatments for prostate cancer. Exercise and plenty of rest can keep you well during the treatment process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Chemotherapy is used to treat prostate cancer, but this type of therapy does not completely rid the body of cancer.
  • Some doctors recommend not treating prostate cancer immediately. They instead choose to monitor the cancer if they suspect that it won't grow quickly and spread to other areas of the body.
