Step1
Compare the weight. Use a lighter-weight wheel that makes it easier to quickly change speeds and reverse direction. Lighter wheels also allow you to use weight in more strategic parts of the robot.
Step2
Compare the diameter. Generally, smaller wheels give more pushing power and a slower top-end speed; larger wheels provide less pushing power but a faster top-end speed.
Step3
Compare the tread stiffness. Hard wheels wear longer than soft, cushy wheels. Softer tread provides a smoother ride, absorbs shocks better and helps with minor mounting flaws such as bent axles. Find the compromise that best fits your robot's needs.
Step4
Compare the core/hub. It's important that the hub be sturdy yet allow for easy machining if you have to change something. It should also have plenty of area for attaching to the driveshaft. Most hubs are either hard plastic or aluminum.
Step5
Compare the cost. There's always a trade-off between quality and cost. Remember to figure enough budget to have spare wheels on hand.
