Hula hoops, first popularized in the 1950s, are large plastic rings you twirl around your waist, thus the moniker "hula hoop." Great for exercise, hula hoops seemed to be everywhere until the 1970s, when they faded and became a niche toy. Used for performances and as an exercise aid, hula hoops still provide hours of fun for many people. Here's what to wear when using a hula hoop.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dress in light cotton clothing--the simpler, the better. Choose a white cotton shirt over a thick cotton T-shirt. You don't want any fabric to cause friction and make the hoop slip or fall. Avoid spandex and other slick material.

  2. Step 2

Bare your midriff if you're a female. Hula hoops and belly dancing share similarities. There's lots of waist and hip action, and leaving your belly unencumbered by clothes will help your routine. Many female hula hoop enthusiasts favor costumes that mimic belly dancing outfits.

  3. Step 3

Leave the jewelry at home. Avoid necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings and other items that may impede your routine or fall off and distract you.

  4. Step 4

Wear loose fitting, long pants. Avoid pants that are too baggy (you may trip) or slippery, tight-fitting pants that may interfere with the hip motion. Wear cotton shorts, but try to avoid fancy denim cutoffs because of the thick fabric.

  5. Step 5

Sport some sneakers or comfortable shoes with sturdy soles that give you a firm footing. Avoid high heels or pointy-toed shoes unless you're a hula hoop expert or they're part of your act.
