Potato peelers are specialized kitchen helpers found in nearly every household. They are a popular alternative to using a normal knife because they are so much safer and easier to use. Parents are especially fond of giving potato peelers to children so they can help in the preparation of meals.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the peeler in your dominant hand and the potato firmly in your other hand.

  2. Step 2

Angle the peeler so that one of the cutting surfaces presses lightly into the skin of the potato. The alternate cutting surface will rest lightly on the potato, where it will help to guide the peeler.

  3. Step 3

Push the peeler away from your body and hands. Always push away from yourself to avoid cutting your hand.

  4. Step 4

Rotate the potato so you are always peeling in the center of the top side. This will help you keep your grip on the potato and minimize the chance of injury.

  5. Step 5

Remove the eyes of the potatoes with the sharpened end of the peeler (not every potato peeler has one of these). Wait until you have completely peeled the potato so you know exactly how much to remove.

Tips & Warnings
  • Potato peelers can peel much more than potatoes. They are excellent at peeling other thin-skinned vegetables such as cucumbers and carrots.
  • Potato peelers are much safer than knives, but they still have very sharp edges; children should never use one unsupervised.
  • Always aim the peeler away from your hands and body.
  • As the potato is peeled, it will become more slippery. Be aware of this to help avoid accidental injury.
