The DMOZ Open Directory Project is an enormous Web directory. Volunteer editors keep the DMOZ project running. If you choose to become a volunteer editor for this project, there are a few simple steps to follow. Before you know it, you'll be helping with the largest Web directory out there.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the DMOZ Open Directory Project website and find a category that you'd like to work on. Choose something that you're knowledgeable and passionate about. Even though it doesn't take long to edit on DMOZ, you still want to have fun while you're doing it.

  2. Step 2

Choose a specific category to apply to, preferably one with fewer than 100 sites. After proving yourself as an editor and gaining some experience, you can apply for the more general categories on the Web directory.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Become an Editor" link at the top of the category's page. Read the guidelines to become familiar with the role of an editor. After you've made the decision to continue with the application process, click the "Proceed" button at the bottom of the page.

  4. Step 4

Fill out the application to become an Open Directory Project editor. Take your time and fill it out correctly. You're attempting to prove yourself to the people looking at your application, so ensure that it's free of grammatical errors and is fully completed.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the decision on your application. If your application to the Web directory is not accepted, you can reapply for the same category. If you choose to reapply, try to figure out where you went wrong on your first application.
