Municipal versus private Wi-Fi has been the topic of some recent controversy across the United States. Many are excited at the prospect of municipal Wi-Fi, while others are more apt to stay with a private provider. Use these steps to learn more about municipal and private Wi-Fi and how to choose between the two.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read everything you can about both types of Wi-Fi service. It is important to understand the facts about Wi-Fi and not only read opinions. But opinions are good for finding out how different Wi-Fi services are working around the country and the impact municipal Wi-Fi is having on cities.

  2. Step 2

Call your local city department and ask if your city has municipal Wi-Fi or if they are planning on going that direction. Ask about the estimated price for the service to compare with your current private service provider.

  3. Step 3

Consider the benefits of municipal Wi-Fi. Municipal Wi-Fi offers a low-cost way (which allows for a lower cost of living) to network an entire city together on one network. It also allows for more people to get online, aids public safety officials to do better jobs and unifies all of the city departments. This could allow tax dollars to be better spent.

  4. Step 4

See the benefits of private sector Wi-Fi. You will have your choice of service providers and thus be able to choose the price and package that is right for you. You have the choice of using a well-known service provider, while many cities use smaller companies for municipal Wi-Fi to save dollars.

  5. Step 5

Make an educated decision. Once you have all the information you need, make your choice. This should include finding out if your city even has municipal Wi-Fi. But if it doesn't, don't worry; it could be on the horizon.
