How to Import a Contact List Into Trillian Astra

Trillian has long been known as an elite, stand-alone instant messaging and chat client. It allows you to manage all of your instant messaging services in one neat application. It preserves the native features of the individual chat clients, while also providing new features available only through Trillian. Trillian Astra is the fourth major release of Trillian. Importing your contact list into this new alpha version of Trillian is fairly easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• Trillian Astra installed
• “Buddies.xml" file from your old Trillian installation (version 3.1 or earlier)

1. Exit Trillian Astra if it is currently running. It must be closed to start.
2. Make a copy of the "buddies.xml" file from an earlier (3.1) installation (right-click on the icon and choose Copy from the pop-up menu). Leave the original file where it is.
3. Locate your user directory for Trillian Astra. If you did a clean install of Astra, this directory is actually in a hidden folder, either Application Data (XP) or DataAPP (Vista). You will need to turn on viewing hidden folders in your preferences.
4. Paste the file into the directory, by typing Ctrl-V. If a warning pops up saying there is already a file of that name and asks if you want to replace it, click "Yes."
5. Find a file called "astra.ini" in the same folder you located in Step 3, and open it.
6. Find the line that reads, "Use Local Contacts=0" in the code, and change it to "Use Local Contacts=1" and then save the file.
7. Locate the .ini files for any accounts that you have changed the identity. Within these files, find the line in the code that reads "prefsConnectionSection=Personal Accounts" and change the value that reads "Personal Accounts" so the match the identity list in the "buddies.xml" file. Save the files.
8. Re-login to your Trillian Astra account to see your imported contact list.
