Whether you are a teacher or a researcher, you can get grant money and access to historical documents to help you plan curricula and develop papers or even to complete a research paper. Maybe you want to come up with new curricula ideas for your class. If so, apply for a fellowship with the Massachusetts Historical Society. Here's how you can apply for this fellowship.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Take These Steps If You're a Teacher

Step1
Prepare a resume that is specifically formatted and designed for the Massachusetts Historical Society's fellowship. Emphasize your experience as a history teacher, as well as your previous research project experience.
Step2
Prove to the Society that this fellowship will benefit yourself as well as your students and other teachers at your school. Write a two-page letter of intent that describes the kind of project you would like to research. Emphasize your need to use the Massachusetts Historical Society's collections to complete your project. Also, emphasize creative classroom activities that your project will help you to organize.
Step3
Get a letter of support from your school's principal or your department head. Do not seal or fold the letter. Make sure your reference emphasizes your ability as a teacher. Also, ask your reference to comment on your ability to plan and see out projects.
Step4
Put a page number and name in the upper right hand corner of each document. Put this label on everything--even your resume and letter of support.
Step5
Make seven copies of all of your application materials, and mail them in . Check the "Massachusetts Historical Society" website for an address.

Use These Steps If You're a Researcher

Step1
Create a research proposal that is about 1,000 words or four typed pages long. The proposal should describe your research project, explain the importance of your project and discuss which of the Massachusetts Historical Society collections you want to use to complete your research.
Step2
Write a cover letter that introduces you and your research experience. Use this letter to sell yourself and convince the judges that you are capable of completing a research project.
Step3
Compile your curriculum vitae. This should include all of your previous research projects, grants and other relevant information.
Step4
Complete a "Certification for Participants" form, which can be found on the "Massachusetts Historical Society" website.
Step5
Get two letters of recommendation from people who have witnessed you starting and successfully completing research projects.
Step6
Format the pages of your application by numbering each page, as well as including your last name and project title in the upper right-hand corner.
Step7
Mail in two copies of your unstapled application to the Massachusetts Historical Society. Make sure you use a 9 x 11-inch or larger envelope so that you do not have to fold your application.
