Motion is the powerful text editing software included in the Final Cut Pro suite. It can be used to add many amazing effects to video beyond text, though. Usually, entire title sequences are created in Motion. Using Motion is easier than ever given the quick movement of clips between Motion and Final Cut Pro.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Render the project, and save it to preserve a back up copy.

  2. Step 2

Select the desired footage in the Timeline or, if it is a single clip, in the resource list of the Browser pane.

  3. Step 3

Click the "File" command, and then highlight "Send To" and "Motion" Project.

  4. Step 4

Enter the name the sequence should be saved under and where a back up copy of the file should be stored in the Export Selection to Motion Project pane that appears. By default, Launch "Motion" and Embed "Motion" Content will be selected and this should not be changed unless the file is being prepared for later use of Motion. In this case, deselect Launch "Motion."

  5. Step 5

Click "Save." Motion opens, and the selected footage appears in the current Motion project. A new Motion clip is automatically added to the resource list of the Final Cut Pro project when this happens so the original, unmodified footage remains intact.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although Shake is technically considered the Apple special effects program, there are an incredible amount of amazing effects that can be achieved using Motion. It can be used to created animated lower-thirds or perform modifications to stills and video sequences.
