Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Pick a niche topic. A niche area can be tough to pinpoint. You need something that is very specific, a requirement of newsletter publishing, but also something that will attract enough subscribers to support your work. Brainstorm topics about which you are passionate and then research their popularity with others.
Step2
Sketch the contents of your newsletter. Before you begin, you should know how many features you intend to include. Also determine if you will need graphics, facts research, or other specific needs.
Step3
Locate people who may be interested. Knowing how to find your target audience is as vital as producing the copy in the newsletter. Before you go about creating a sample copy, you need to know where you will find the people to pay for your newsletter. You may be able to find them through forums or website advertising, or you may go the more traditional route and find them through magazines or associations.
Step4
Create a sample copy. Now is the time for you to fill in the sketch you created. Your sample does not have to be full length, but it should be at least half the length of the full version. Send sample copies to potential subscribers. Newsletters are subscriber-funded, not advertising funded as are magazines, which makes it imperative to get the work into the hands of people who will buy and read it.
Step5
Set up a website. Even if you are making money with a newsletter, you should have a website for it. The site may be a simple one-page marketing letter, or it can provide original content as well. Either way, use the site to entice people to purchase a subscription to your newsletter.
Step6
Ask others to review your newsletter. One of the benefits of the Internet is that you can contact websites or bloggers. These people often are very interested in looking over your product. Ask them to review it.
Step7
Visit conferences and seminars to push your newsletter. Set up a table and offer your newsletter along with complementary literature.
Step8
Write articles and other literature used to support your newsletter. You can write free articles for websites or create booklets about your topic. Your byline and profile in those publications will lead people to your newsletter's website.
