How to Plan a Class Course

Planning a class course is a challenge, especially from scratch. Start with a strong understanding of learning objectives, department or institution goals and the level of the students. Know the materials and approach you will be using. Think about how to assess students effectively. Think about class activities throughout the course.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Plan an outline, a guide that breaks down the course into sections or units that follow a logical order from basic introduction onward. You must teach the required material and meet objectives in a limited time.
Step2
Create a syllabus for college-level students. It should include your contact and course information, a short introduction to the class, a list of resources, an outline of key policies and conduct rules, a list of major assignment, grading values and, optionally, a short listing for each lesson, including homework.
Step3
Avoid planning each lesson in detail before the course starts. Learning happens in unplanned ways. Leave room for flexibility and minor changes to course plans. Spontaneous opportunities for learning are often rewarding.
Step4
Be realistic. Challenge but do not overburden students or yourself with too many graded assignments, surplus homework or little time to complete work. Each lesson centers on a theme that can be reasonably understood and followed and connects clearly with the previous and next class.
Step5
Create assignments and grading values that are appropriate for the course. Assessment can include graded and non-graded work and a mix of individual and group projects, participation, performance, and presentations. Design major assignments to meet varied course objectives; demonstrate and engage styles of active learning; and measure student understanding of concepts and use of material.
Step6
Appreciate student difference. Students learn and perform individually. Incorporate varied activities, stimuli, methods, games, and tools to enliven and engage the class. Balance student participation and discussion with lecture.
Step7
Match your methods to your maxims. Whatever you believe, excellent teaching to be should reflect itself in your course plan. Experimentation and creativity are the backbones of individual teaching styles and can lead to successes you can use in future course plans.
