1
Live in or visit New York or Los Angeles. Most soap opera productions occur in these two cities. Once there, get the names and address of production offices for your favorite soap opera and do research on their needs for extras. Don't call or contact them directly unless there's a specific call for extras.
-
2
Register with a casting service like Central Casting. They'll call you when they have an extra role that fits your qualifications.

3
Dress the part. Once called for a part as an extra on a soap opera, you'll have to look and dress a certain way. The casting agent will let you know what you need. The fuller your home wardrobe closet, the better your casting chances will be.
-
4
Take direction well. Extras should blend in with the background, not try to overpower the scene or the star. Listen to the director or the assistant director, and follow instructions carefully.
-
5
Bring a book. Many soap opera productions have long shooting schedules, and things don't always go according to plan. As a soap opera extra you may spend more time reading a book off camera than acting on-camera.
