How to Get a Hunting License in Georgia

Georgia boasts some of the most plentiful hunting in the South, with whitetail dear, turkey and bear being the most popular. Georgians know the importance of being properly licensed for hunting and the process is quite simple. Follow these steps to obtain a hunting license in Georgia.

      Complete a certified hunter education course before buying a season hunting license if you are over 12 years old and were born after January 1, 1961. Hunters buying licenses for 1 or 7 day license do not have to take the course. Non-residents can also use their home state hunter education course to satisfy this licensing prerequisite.

      Purchase your basic hunting license online or in person at the Georigia Wildlife Offices. There are several different ones to choose from if hunting big game or birds so you must know what you are hunting, for how long and with what weapon. Different licenses range in price and non-residents licenses cost more.

      Buy a lifetime license if you are a avid hunter and you think that you will be hunting in Georgia for the rest of your life or at least the next 30 years. It is still valid if you move out of state, but when buying it, you must be a resident. Sportsman licenses are also cost-effective if you plan on hung and fishing all year long. They are reserved only for residents of the state. Lifetime license holders still must purchase duck stamps when duck hunting.

      Apply for the free Migratory Bird permit so that the wildlife commission can regulate and track bird populations. This is only needed for hunters hunting birds.

      Get your deer harvest record. These are seasonal and will have to be renewed for each deer season. Don't mistake this for a hunting license that needs to be renewed annually.
