Step 1
Choose a product that meets your sensual preferences, remembering feel and smell. Oil-based lubricants are slick and soft, but can be messy or stain sheets and clothes. Water bases are lighter, wash off easily, and can be reactivated with more water if they dry up.
-
Step 2
Plan your protection. Used alone, spermicidal lubricant is not an effective birth control method, and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
-
Step 3
Test yourself for sensitivity. Spermicidal properties, particularly N-9, are known to cause allergic reactions in many people, or at the least, skin irritations. Experiment with different products if you are not sure or do a spot-test.
-
Step 4
Consider fun features. Many products come in cool bottles, colors, fragrances, or textures, and may be fun to shop for in pairs. Part of the experience of using lube is its application, reapplication or removal.
-
Step 5
Browse other types of spermicidal stimulants with lubricating power such as jellies. Spermicidal jellies can be used with condoms and are safe for anal as well as vaginal sex. Jellies are also widely available and are non-irritant.
-
Step 6
Get some samples from your doctor, sexual health clinic, or pharmacist if you are unsure what to choose or how your body will react. If you are worried about oil-based lubricants and the package is not clearly marked, put some on your skin and notice whether water beads on it. If so, then it's oil.
