A xylophone wind chime is a device that makes music as the wind blows through it. Xylophones are musical instruments that have metal plates laid out similar to a piano. Make this wind chime with a professional xylophone or from a xylophone children's toy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a screwdriver to remove the sound plates from the xylophone.

  2. Step 2

    Cut a 5-inch circle out of the 1 x 8 inch board.

  3. Step 3

Attach a key chain to one hole of each sound plate. Use up to 8 different plates in the wind chime. Use the higher pitched sound plates if you want a higher pitched wind chime. Use the lower pitched sound plates for a deeper, fuller sound.

  4. Step 4

Drill holes 1/2 inch away from the edge of the wooden circle. Space the holes out evenly. You should have 1 less hole than you have plates. So if you have 8 plates, drill 7 holes.

  5. Step 5

Find the center of the circle. Measure 1/4 inch from 2 sides of the center. Drill holes at the 1/4-inch marks.

  6. Step 6

Hang the sound plates around the outside of the circle with the key chains.

  7. Step 7

Feed the wire through one of the center holes. Slide the last sound plate onto the wire and then feed it up through the bottom and the other center hole.

  8. Step 8

Wrap the wire tightly around the other end of the wire. This creates the hanger for the wind chimes.

  9. Step 9

Hang your wind chime outside in a breezy area and enjoy all the sounds of a xylophone.
