Repair chipped plastic to save an old plastic item that is broken or worn out. By repairing a chipped piece of plastic, you extend the life of the object for up to 10 years. Repairing a chipped piece of plastic does not have to be a difficult project.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pourable urethane epoxy
  • Electrical tape or duct tape
  • Box cutter or razor blade

Step1
Make an outline around the chipped area with the tape. Pull up one side of the tape to make a barrier around the chipped area. Leave at least 1 1/2 inches of plastic around the area for the epoxy to adhere to.
Step2
Mix the epoxy. The epoxy comes with instructions that tell you the proper way to mix it. Different brands have different instructions. Most urethane epoxies meld within 2 to 3 minutes. Keep mixing until the epoxy is ready to pour onto the chipped plastic.
Step3
Pour the urethane epoxy onto the plastic you need to repair. Cover the entire area evenly. If the area has bolts or screws in it, leave the screws or bolts in the plastic. The epoxy forms around the screws or bolts and holds them in place.
Step4
Allow the epoxy to dry. When wet, the epoxy is clear. As it dries, it turns white. If you have a screw or bolt in the epoxy, allow it to almost harden. Begin to unscrew the bolt or screw. Bring it in and out of the plastic a few times to prevent a permanent bond.
Step5
Trim any excess epoxy from the sides with a razor blade. Once the epoxy is dry, remove the tape borders and use your repaired plastic product.
