  1. Step 1

Study magic rigorously. David Copperfield did not become a magician overnight. Although he has natural ability, Copperfield approached magic as if it were a rigorous academic exercise. His devotion to studying magic went so far as to land him a job teaching magic at New York University when he 16. So, start studying the history and art of magic to perform like the master.

  2. Step 2

Develop an on-stage personality. Unlike some contemporary magicians who have turned to the street to practice magic, David Copperfield is a master of stage performance. Copperfield developed an on-stage personality that allows audiences to suspend their disbelief as he does his logic-inverting tricks.

  3. Step 3

Think big. David Copperfield's form of magic specializes in the impossible, not just the improbable. Impregnating a woman on stage without touching her, making the Statue of Liberty or Hoover Dam disappear are all part of Copperfield's magical repertoire. While you don't have to start with dam-sized object, you must aim to conquer the impossible to perform magic like David Copperfield.

  4. Step 4

Keep moving forward. If there is one single thing that characterizes Copperfield's career as a performance magician it is his continuing ambition to undertake bigger and more spectacular feats of illusion. To perform magic like Copperfield, it is important to make each successive trick more spectacular and unlikely than the one before it.
