1
Learn about both types of surrogacy. With traditional surrogacy, your own egg and the sperm of the intended father or a donor is used, making the baby biologically yours. With gestational surrogacy, the fertilized egg will come from the intended mother or an egg donor. You will simply carry the baby.

2
Decide if you can handle parting with a baby from a traditional surrogacy. With traditional surrogacy, your egg was fertilized so the baby will feel like part of you. This reason alone is why many women choose to act as a gestational surrogate.

3
Determine whether you can endure In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) for a gestational surrogacy. During IVF, an embryo will be implanted into your uterus. You also undergo a series of hormonal treatments, orally and through injection. Though the emotional difficulties of surrogacy may be less intense with this method, the physical demands are greater. You may be asked to repeat the procedure again if it doesn't work the first time.

4
Educate yourself on the laws within your state for both types of surrogacy. Learn your rights as a traditional or gestational surrogate and find out how those laws affect the intended parents.
