How to Escort an Oversized Load

Oversized loads require escorts to ensure the safety of the driver, the load and any other drivers on the road. Escort cars usually are provided by outside companies. Use these steps to learn about getting a job escorting an oversized load.

Instructions

    • 1

Research escort car companies in your area. You can do this online or through the yellow pages. Another great resource would be the Better Business Bureau, as you can also find out information about how many accidents each company has and turnover rates.

    • 2

Contact each company for employment requirements. You should find out the driver's requirements before applying in the event you need to get additional training, licensing or bonded.

    • 3

Consider getting some of the needed equipment, such as lights, oversized load signs and communication device. The company looking to hire you will need all of the specific information surrounding this equipment and the vehicle you will be using. See the 1st Pilot Car Companies' site for more information.

    • 4

Send in all the pertinent information and wait. You should consider applying at multiple companies if looking for a quick response or work. The more experienced and prepared you are the more attractive an employee you become.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have accidents or points on your driving record, it will count against you and may not get you the job.
