The Shangri-La Diet is an eating plan detailed in a book written by Dr. Seth Roberts, a psychologist at the University of California. Roberts claims the Shangri-La Diet can help you lose weight by utilizing psychological techniques.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that your body wants to reach a set weight. The basis of the Shangri-La Diet is that your body wishes to reach a set point. Your body's metabolism will adjust to reach it if you let it.

  2. Step 2

To get your body to its set point, you must psychologically disassociate the types of food that you eat. If you eat flavorful foods that you love, your body craves more of those foods.

  3. Step 3

To begin dissociating, eat bland foods with little or no flavor. This causes your body to begin dropping the weight on its own.

  4. Step 4

Taste foods that have an unfamiliar flavor. According to Roberts, your body burns these calories faster since it does not recognize the flavor of the food.

  5. Step 5

Check the glycemic index of foods. Part of the Shangri-La Diet is that dieters should eat foods that take longer to digest to give the body time to disassociate the food. Foods with a lower glycemic index fit the bill.

  6. Step 6

Add tasteless foods between your meals to lose even more weight. Suggestions made by Roberts include consuming a small amount of olive oil, sugar water or a raw egg.

Tips & Warnings
  • The consumption of sugar water and olive oil supposedly decreases your appetite.
  • Raw eggs should not be consumed because of the increased risk of salmonella.
