How to Crochet Hexagon Shaped Granny Square Type Motifs

Many people who crochet work almost exclusively with granny squares. These are individual squares (or other shapes) that are worked up and sewn together later to make afghans, baby blankets, scarves and even sweaters. Granny squares are easy to take with you, so you can work on your project almost anywhere.

Things You'll Need

• Yarn (1 or 2 colors)
• Crochet hook
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Chain 6, then join the ends together with a slip stitch.

2. Chain 6, then work a triple crochet stitch into the ring. Don't work the stitch into the chain, but under the chain. Repeat this 11 times. You will have 12 triple crochet stitches in a ring. Slip stitch into the chain space of the first stitch of the round.

3. Chain 3, work a double crochet stitch into the same chain space, chain 2 and work two more double crochet stitches into the same space.

4. Work three double crochet stitches into the next chain space.

5. Work 2 double crochet stitches, chain 2 and 2 more double crochet stitches into the next chain space.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 four more times. Each chain 2 space will become a corner of the hexagon and the sides will consist of 7 double crochet stitches.

7. Work a slip stitch into the third chain of the initial chain 3 of the round. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Tips & Warnings

• If you want the second round to be a different color, fasten off after the first round and join the new color into any chain space.

• For a tighter pattern, skip the first round and work the round two pattern in the initial chain. For additional rounds, work a double crochet stitch into each stitch of the previous round and 2 double crochet, chain 2, two double crochet pattern into the chain 2 spaces.
