You don't have to trade in your crochet hook for needles to create cable patterns in your next project. Getting a cable knit look on a crocheted sweater is easier than you might think as explained in the following steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Begin by working the row in half-double crochet stitches. Stop when you get to the place where you want your cable to begin.
Step2
Skip 3 stitches, then work a front post triple crochet stitch into each of the next 3 stitches. To make the front post stitch, yarn over twice. Insert the hook around the post of the stitch below from back to front, yarn over and then complete the stitch.
Step3
Work a front post triple crochet stitch in each of the 3 stitches you skipped in Step 2.
Step4
Finish the row in half double crochet stitches, working other cable stitches. Chain 2 and turn.
Step5
Work cables on the back side of the work, this time completing back post triple crochet stitches. To make the back post stitch, yarn over twice. Insert the hook around the post of the stitch below from front to back, yarn over and then complete the stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a more intricate design, work front and back post stitches between the cables to create raised vertical lines.
  • For the crochet cable pattern to work, count your stitches and begin the cable pattern in the same stitch each time. A small mistake will be obvious in the finished sweater.

on 7/10/2008 If you think of the sts as 6 5 4 3 2 1 (as working from right to left), you'll be working front post trebles around 4 5 6 then around 1 2 3. Don't forget to work around the posts of the sts in the row below.
