How to Crochet a Buttonhole
Crocheting a buttonhole can be tricky. If you make the buttonhole too large, your crocheted garment won't stay buttoned. If you make it too small, you risk damaging your garment when you try to force the button through the buttonhole. Follow these steps to learn about crocheting buttonholes that will work every time.

1
Work a row of single crochet (SC) in the row where you want the buttonhole. Any other stitch would not be tight enough to make a good buttonhole.
-
2
Turn and work a second row of SC. At the point where you want the buttonhole, chain 1 or more, depending on the size of the button. The chain should be slightly shorter than the diameter of the button, so the buttonhole will have to stretch slightly to accommodate the button. This will ensure that the button doesn't slip out while you're wearing your garment.

3
Skip the same number of stitches that are in the chain and finish working SCs in the row. If you are making more than one buttonhole, plan ahead so the buttonholes will be evenly spaced.
-
4
Turn and work another row of SCs. When you get to the chain, work the same number of SCs under the chain as the chain is long. Continue working a few more SCs in the row.
-
5
Stop and put the button through the buttonhole to see if the fit is snug but not tight. If the buttonhole seems to be the wrong size, pull out the stitches to the chain and make the chain longer or shorter.

6
Finish the row after getting the buttonhole the correct size.
