Step 1
Design a restroom pass out of some type of durable washable material. Wood, metal or plastic will all hold up under constant use.
-
Step 2
Find a place in your classroom to hang the passes. Usually, right by the classroom door works best.
-
Step 3
Make both a boys and girls pass rather than just one universal pass. This helps you keep track of who is out of the room.
-
Step 4
Set up times when the passes can be used. This should only be during student's individual work time. Do not let students to leave the room during instruction. All restroom visits should end before the last five minutes of class.
-
Step 5
Keep an eye on the use or abuse of the passes. If students are misusing the restroom privileges then put the passes away for a week. Students can ask permission to use the facilities. Try not to punish the whole class if one group, boys or girls, are abusing the passes.
-
Step 6
Encourage students to use the restroom before coming to class. This will help eliminate disruptions and teach the kids to plan their time wisely.
-
Step 7
Make sure to have a backup plan for emergencies. A student who is ill should not need to wait for someone to return from the restroom, or be expected to stop and pick up a pass.
