Step 1
Open the resume in its current format.
-
Step 2
Select the entire text of the resume. Once the resume text is chosen, right-click and select "Copy."
-
Step 3
Open the text editor software on the computer, most often the software is Notepad. Now select "Edit" from the main menu. From that menu, choose "Paste".
-
Step 4
Check the entire document for conversion issues. Text editors will convert formatting, such as bullet points, to its own format. Change these conversions to make the resume appear professional. Also, peruse the resume for character spacing issues. Tab spacing when converting a resume to ASCII can be a concern.
-
Step 5
Save the resume once the alterations are complete. Select "File" from the main menu. From the file menu choose "Save" to store a saved copy of the ASCII resume.
-
Step 6
Have a friend or colleague check the resume for conversion issues. A person can miss formatting issues when looking at their own resume file.
-
Step 7
Send an email to yourself and few other people with the ASCII resume as an attachment. Open the ASCII resume attachment to ensure the file changes saved properly.
