Starting with a straight line while constructing a wall, hanging wallpaper or displaying artwork can be the key to whether the project succeeds. Begin the job right and use a plumbline or plumb bob to achieve a straight, vertical line.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide where you want your straight line. If hanging wallpaper, this will be away from the corners and any doorways. When hanging art, take the horizontal measurement or height measurement with a tape measure.

  2. Step 2

Climb the ladder or step stool and hold the plumb line or chalk box string against the wall where it meets the ceiling. Let the weight or chalk box hang free.

  3. Step 3

Give the plumb bob or chalk line enough time to quit moving. The bob or chalk box may move side-to-side for several minutes before becoming still.

  4. Step 4

Pull the string or plumb bob tight and hold it against the bottom of the wall near the floor. You might have a friend help you with this.

  5. Step 5

Pull the middle of the string straight back from the wall and let it snap against the wall, if using a chalk box plumb line. This will leave a straight line mark chalked on the wall. If using a plumb bob, you can rub chalk on the string before starting. You also can mark a line in pencil, using the string as a guide.
