How to Ask for a Reciprocal Link

The quickest way to make your website popular is to add some links to other related sites your readers might find interesting. To make this beneficial, you'll want to ask for a reciprocal link from the sites you link to, a fancy term for trading links with other web sites. Sounds easy, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on what type of sites you'd like your link to appear. You want to get your link on sites with higher ratings in the search engines than your own to help pull yours up a bit. But you also want your link on websites that relate to your topic so the other site's visitors will want to click on the link and visit you as well.

    • 2

Be careful which sites you approach about trading links. You want to link to quality websites that won't turn your readers off, including those with such topics as porn, gambling, male enhancement products or politics. To engage successfully in reciprocal linking, you must not allow a link to your site to be placed on any other site with tons of links, known in the search engine community as "link farms."

    • 3

Approach the owners of the websites that interest you. Mention something you sincerely like about their site, tell them about your site, why you'd like to link to theirs and why engaging in reciprocal linking with your website would be beneficial to both of you.

Make a list of search terms for which you want your site to be found in search engines. Check the sites that come up on the first page of results, the ones receiving the most visitors for those search terms. Go back to the search engine and type in: "link:www.competitors-sitename.com" for a list of all the sites that are linking to each of those sites. These are your competitors, the sites you want to ask for a reciprocal link.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find out what web sites are already linked to yours. Go to Google and type in: "link:www.mydomainname.com."
