Step1
Start with a quality canvas and a stock of good supplies like paint and brushes. The masters never skimped on supplies, so you shouldn't either.
Step2
Copy a masterpiece that is large and easy to see. Instead of referring to a small copy, try to obtain a large poster or some other reference that's close to the size of the original. You can always make your copy larger or smaller, but it's helpful to have a reference as close to the original as possible.
Step3
Familiarize yourself with the artist's style. By looking beyond the masterpiece you want to copy, you can get a feel for the artist's style as a whole. This approach can help you improvise if you can't figure out exactly how the artist achieved her masterpiece.
Step4
Look closely at the masterpiece from a number of angles and in good light. By getting an overall feel for the work and having a clear view, your task of copying the masterpiece will be easier.
Step5
Remain open to interpretation. You may never be able to paint a masterpiece exactly like the original, so be prepared to improvise. An overall feeling of a masterpiece is better than no painting at all.
