If you are going on a camping trip where you will also be fishing, know how to keep the fish safe to eat. Without knowing the proper steps, the fish you catch could spoil and you could get sick. However, by following these instructions, you can keep fish safe to eat when camping.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Keep the fish in the water as long as possible. After you catch the fish, you can put the fish on a stringer specially designed to keep the fish alive in the water but not let it escape. Purchase fish stringer at the Westforth Sports website. To find the available stringers, click on the "fishing tackle" link on the homepage of the website. On the subsequent page, click on the "stringers" link. The resulting page has a list of fish stringers you can purchase online.
Step2
Place the fish on ice. If you must remove the fish from the water, keep the fish cold. The best way to do that is to place the fish in an ice chest. Keeping the fish cold keeps it from spoiling. If you are camping in a place where there is snow, use packed snow to keep the fish from spoiling.
Step3
Cook the fish at a high temperature. Don't undercook fish when you are camping. Undercooked fish can lead to food poisoning and since you're camping, there's a chance that you won't be able to get the proper medical attention in a timely manner.
Step4
Keep all fish products away from tents when camping. Animals are attracted to the smell of fish, especially bears. After you've eaten the fish, dispose the leftovers in a place far away from your campsite.
