For many people, dogs are considered members of the family. Therefore, it's no surprise that an increasing number of families are opting to take their dog on the family vacation. However, traveling with a dog is not always easy. It involves significant preparation and planning. By following the next few steps you can make traveling with your dog more enjoyable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Consider your mode of transportation carefully. Flying can be traumatic for dogs. If your dog is small enough, he can ride in the cabin under your seat; however, larger dogs need to ride in a crate in the cargo area. Driving with pets allows for more control and flexibility, but will take more time.
Step2
Contact your veterinarian a few weeks before travel for a check up. You'll need a certificate of health from the veterinarian if you plan on flying with your dog. Ask your veterinarian about sedation if your dog gets nervous. Get heartworm and flea and tick prevention.
Step3
Select your accommodations early. Find a hotel that allows dogs. Check the weight limitations. Also, if you're staying in an urban area, look for accommodations with grassy areas or walking trails nearby. Ask for a first floor room, so you don't have to subject your dog to dark stairwells and elevators.
Step4
Purchase travel gear for your dog. If you're flying you'll need a bag for under the seat or a crate for the cargo. If you're driving, consider purchasing a harness for the seat or a crate. If using a crate, be sure that you have a way to secure the crate to the interior, so it doesn't fall over.
Step5
Bring your dog's bed or some other comforts from home such as favorite toys and eating bowl. Your dog will be more secure with these familiar objects.
Step6
Stop every two to three hours during travel. Allow your dog to walk around and relieve himself. Provide lots of water as he may become dehydrated from panting.
Step7
Identify a local doggy day care center where you can leave your dog as you do activities. Most hotels don't want dogs left unattended. Also, it's not safe to leave your dog alone in the hotel. Doggy day care will provide a safe alternative while you visit the sights.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your dog for a long walk upon arriving at your destination. Allow your dog to sniff around and become acclimated to her new environment.
  • Don't bring your dog to a family's house unless they have given you permission and you are certain that they are welcoming your dog with open arms.
  • Don't leave your dog in a hot car. Roll down the windows and keep in view of your car.
