If you're a tennis player looking to increase the performance of your racquet, consider customizing it yourself. The other option is to just buy a new racquet altogether, but customizing your racquet can give you greater control over the small details that determine how it will perform.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine whether your racquet is balanced head-light or head-heavy. Beginner racquets usually have most of their weight in their oversized heads, while "player" racquets have more of their weight in their handles.

  2. Step 2

Use a postal scale to weigh out the total number of ounces of lead tape you'd like to add to your racquet.

  3. Step 3

Place two strips of lead tape at the 12 o'clock position on the inside of the racquet's frame if you want to move the sweet spot away from the handle.

  4. Step 4

Place strips of lead tape at both the three and nine o'clock positions on the inside of the racquet's frame if you want to increase its torsional stability without changing the location of the sweet spot too much.

  5. Step 5

Place strips of lead tape at the six o'clock position near the throat of the racquet to make it heavier without changing the overall balance too much. This is the best way to give your shots greater weight without altering the sweet spot.

  6. Step 6

Consider adding lead weights to the inside of the handle if you'd rather move the sweet spot down the racquet face.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make your strips of lead tape between four and five inches in length.
  • Try to find lead tape that's one-quarter inch in width. Wider tape will work, but you'll need to cut it in half in order to place it on the racquet without dealing with the grommets.
