A good personal lubricant can turn up the heat of any sexual adventure. While performance is certainly a factor when choosing the right lubricant, health should be the top priority. You should always buy a hypoallergenic lubricant, but you should also know which type of hypoallergenic lubricant you actually need.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what types of sex play you will generally be enjoying when shopping for a hypoallergenic lubricant. Intercourse with condoms calls for lube that is labeled "condom safe," while any activity involving silicone toys calls for lube that is free of a silicone base (the friction of silicone against silicone will ruin the toy).

  2. Step 2

Steer clear of most oil-based lubricants as a general rule, especially if you are a woman. Oil-based lubricants have ingredients that can interfere with a woman's natural chemistry, leading to yeast infections or irritation.

  3. Step 3

Choose a hypoallergenic lubricant that is petroleum based only if you are engaging in anal intercourse. There is some back and forth controversy over whether petroleum based lubrication can cause problems during vaginal intercourse.

  4. Step 4

Steer clear of most flavored lubricants, as some of them contain sugar of some sort. The sugar products can and do cause disruptions in natural body chemistry, leaving the door open to various infections.

  5. Step 5

Opt for a hypoallergenic lubricant that is water based if you just want to play it safe. The only drawback to using lubricants with a water base is that they tend to break down quicker than their counterparts. However, a water base offers the least threat of allergic reactions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Washing affected areas well after lubricant use cuts the chances of infections and reactions, regardless of what type of lube you choose. Good hygiene is a cornerstone to good sexual health.

on 4/7/2009 Look for certified organic lubricants not just natural ones or ones that say organic but not certified - this means all ingredients and production makes sure the products are hypoallergenic
