A penile implant is a device placed in the penis in order for him to achieve an erection. It is a surgery intended for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. Most penile implant patients have the procedure done because they are not responding to medications to correct the problem.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See a surgeon for an evaluation. Before you can have the penile implant surgery done, a surgeon needs to know the cause of your erectile dysfunction and see if there are any other alternative therapies that can be used.

  2. Step 2

Discuss which type of penile implant will work best for you. There is a hydraulic implant that can be pumped up for use as well as a semi-rigid version that is always partially hard.

  3. Step 3

Follow any pre-operative instructions provided. Once you have decided to get the penile implant done, the surgeon should let you know what medications you have to stop before the procedure. He may also have specific instructions about washing the area around the penis.

  4. Step 4

Get the penile surgery performed. The doctor makes a cut in the penis and then inserts the implant after measurements have been taken. The area is then sutured.

  5. Step 5

Take any medications needed after the surgery. You'll probably be prescribed painkillers and antibiotics. Your doctor will also advise you on how to care for the area during recovery.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are getting a hydraulic penile implant, a pump is inserted during surgery for use inside of the scrotum.
  • Remember to read up on the pros and cons of each type of penile implant before you decide on which one you would like. Cost, risks and effectiveness are all important considerations.
