Caring for the needs of others is one of the most important things that human beings can do. As the population continues to live longer, the need for personal care attendants will grow. These important people will need to know the following things about providing patient care.

  1. Step 1

    Talk with the patient about the care that is being provided. Give detailed descriptions about everything being done. Anticipate questions before they are asked.

  2. Step 2

    Clean the immediate living areas. If the patient spends the majority of his time in the bedroom, make sure linen is always clean and floors are swept or vacuumed properly.

  3. Step 3

    Lift the patient correctly. When uncomfortable or unsure about lifting a patient, seek the advice of a licensed nurse or physical therapist. This avoids harm to the patient and the personal care attendant.

  4. Step 4

    Handle medications for the patient only after being advised to do so by a nurse. Sometimes patients are confused about medications. Nurses are aware of possible interactions and specific instructions regarding medications.

  5. Step 5

    Bathe and feed patient when he or she asks. Patients are often set in their ways and want to do certain things at certain times. Allow this when possible.

  6. Step 6

    Seek family members for advice. It is important to provide a network of care providers for the patient. When everyone is working toward the same goal, the outcome is often positive for the patient.

  7. Step 7

    Smile often. Good feelings are often contagious. Creating a positive environment will go a long way in keeping the patient healthy.
