Step 1
Consider the seat of the chair. See if it has enough padding to distribute the weight of your hips and thighs and is wide enough for you to be able to shift your weight from side to side. The front edge of the seat should curve slightly downward so there isn't any pressure on the back of your legs. The seat should also be adjustable with controls that are easy to maneuver from a sitting position.

Step 2
Lean back in the chair and check for adequate support for your lower and upper back. If you have back problems, choose a desk chair that has an adjustable lumbar support.
-
Step 3
Decide what kind of arm support you need. If some of your work requires more freedom of movement, consider removable armrests. They should be short enough for you to slide your chair in close to the desk and positioned so they support your arms while your shoulders are relaxed.
-
Step 4
Examine the base of the chair. The most stable ones have a wide base with five casters. This gives you a chair that won't easily tip over when you lean in to your work or stretch to the side.

Step 5
Try out a variety of chairs made by different manufactures. There is a wide selection of styles and fabrics from which to choose. If you take the time to look around and test them out, you will be able to choose the desk chair that's right for you.
