How to Play Defense Like Bruce Bowen

One of the most recognized defensive players in the NBA is Bruce Bowen. He always takes on the opposing team's best offensive player. He has been accused of being dirty and there may be some fire with that smoke, but the results are difficult to argue with. If you utilize these techniques, you can play defense like Bruce Bowen.

  1. Step 1

    Be relentless. If you are guarding the other team's best player, you are going to get run off of screens all day long. Even when you are knocked off and are behind a step, do not give up the play. Work to get back involved and you can still challenge a shot or pass. In order to play like Bruce Bowen you will have to bring full effort to every defensive possession.

  2. Step 2

    Work on your technique. Effort is vital to playing great defense, but if you do not maintain good technique, you will struggle to play like Bruce Bowen. Stay low, move on the balls of your feet, use quick short steps and keep your weight forward. Bruce Bowen is able to challenge almost every shot, even fade away jumpers because he keeps his weight forward. Maintain solid technique along with great effort and you can play like Bruce Bowen.

  3. Step 3

    Play physical. Bruce Bowen is always pushing and grabbing on defense. He does not do anything too obvious though that will draw the attention of the officials. He wears his opponents down physically and mentally which can provide a big benefit if you can play like Bruce Bowen.

  4. Step 4

    Trust your teammates. Bruce Bowen is fortunate to play with other great defensive players. When he gets beat he knows he can expect to get help from his teammates. The key is that he does not just rely on his teammates when he gets beat. He keeps fighting to get back into the play. To play like Bruce Bowen, you will need help. Trust your teammates and they will help you.
