Step 1
Consider that you could buy a Japanese kimono second-hand. Because the Japanese rarely purchase used kimono, it is possible to find great deals on these. A new kimono is viewed as a work of art, and priced accordingly.
-
Step 2
Look into the symbolism. If you are planning on wearing your kimono, it's important to note that the colors, patterns, and cut of kimono are significant. For instance, kimono for young single women are much more ornate with longer sleeves and brighter colors. Certain colors and motifs are only worn during designated seasons.

Step 3
Pick out an obi when you buy your Japanese kimono. The obi is just as important as the kimono, and can be very expensive. Remember, the more formal the kimono, the wider and more ornate the obi should be.
-
Step 4
Buy undergarments. The least formal type of kimono, called a yukata, needs no undergarments and doesn't require a lining. All other kimono, however, do. Traditional kimono require hip pads, a shift, an undershift, and belt to be worn underneath.

Step 5
Learn how to put on your kimono. If you buy a Japanese kimono, it won't do you much good unless you know how to put it on. Kimono can be very tricky to wear properly, and each layer must be applied at the right time. It's best to have a friend help you and tie your obi.
