Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (or tollers) are small dogs that are similar to golden retrievers. They are becoming more and more popular, for good reason. These dogs are quiet, intelligent, easy to train, hardworking and devoted to their owners. These characteristics combine to make a dog that is a valuable hunting dog, that can become a much-loved member of the family as well.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High protein dog food
  • Tennis balls for playing fetch
  • Dog comb and brush
  • Dry shampoo
  1. Step 1

Ask for a health certificate from your breeder. Both bitches and dogs should have their eyes tested yearly and should have their hips x-rayed for dysplasia before being allowed to breed.

  2. Step 2

Feed your toller a high-protein dog food. Like all active dogs, your high energy Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever needs lots of protein for fuel.

  3. Step 3

Vaccinate your toller. When he is a puppy, make sure he receives all of the necessary vaccinations. Then make sure to visit your vet at least once a year for his booster shots.

  4. Step 4

Take your toller to school. Make sure your Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever knows the basic commands: sit, stay, come and down. He is a very intelligent dog and will respond well to more advanced training, also.

  5. Step 5

Exercise him every day. These dogs have plenty of energy and need at least 30 minutes of physical exercise every day. Playing fetch, swimming and running are all good ways to exercise your retriever.

  6. Step 6

Comb and brush her at least once a week. Her heavy coat needs ongoing attention to avoid matting. Bathe her only when needed, but use a dry shampoo regularly.
