Step 1
Figure out what purpose you need the ratchet strap to serve. Will it be used to tie down objects or suspend them from above? Choose between light-weight, middle-weight and heavy-duty straps. Straps vary by thickness of material and amount of weight that can be handled with each strap. Note the minimum breaking amount that each ratchet strap can handle. Do not exceed this amount, or the strap will break.
-
Step 2
Determine the type of ratchet material that is needed. Ratchets that will be exposed to weather or submerged in water should be stainless steel or another material that will not rust.
-
Step 3
Get the right type of end attachment. S-hooks can attach to an open hole or anchor hook. Loops can be hooked on to hooks. Endless ratchets have an open end. There are also ratchet straps with an S-hook on one end and a loop on the other.

Step 4
Purchase ratchet straps from hardware stores, truck and boat stores and auto supply shops. A variety of ratchet stores can be found online by doing a search of the Internet.
