How to Become an Adjustment Clerk

Adjustment clerks are in great demand in today's job market. Many are able to start off as entry level employees and are often promoted to these positions. Employers often require little more than a high school diploma to begin in this position.

  1. Step 1

    Apply for an entry level position in the adjustment department to familiarize yourself with how things are done. Volunteer for that extra assignment to expose yourself to all aspects of different job duties.

  2. Step 2

    Ask questions. Follow a problem account through to completion. Often computer systems require notes be added to a customer account to detail the problem and the solution. Take time to review these notes to understand what the adjustment clerk did to handle the problem.

  3. Step 3

    Investigate and interpret data as these are the primary functions when becoming an adjustment clerk. Often understanding a process from beginning to end will aid you in determining if any errors were committed.

  4. Step 4

    Learn how to compile and analyze information. Organization is key when attempting to detect any discrepancies. Become skilled in getting the facts.

  5. Step 5

    Provide excellent customer service. Develop superior communication skills. Always present a helpful attitude when handling customer issues.

  6. Step 6

    Improve your computer skills. Most analysis of data is done by computer. Take advantage of courses offered through colleges to improve your computer, math and writing skills.
