How to Resurface a Teflon Pan

Teflon coating on pots and pans have been wonderful to cooks through the past few decades. Many people use Teflon and find the coating comes off the pans. If you still have some of these non-stick beauties laying around, you might try these steps to take care of nicks and scratches made by utensils and dish washing.

  1. Step 1

    Consider your options to resurface your Teflon pan. Visit the resurfacing websites listed below in the Resources to have your pans recoated.

  2. Step 2

    Try a non-stick coating replacement spray product to resurface your pan. Just spray it on and allow drying per manufacturer's directions. The effect should be as good as new. You can buy the spray at "Always Free Shipping" or "Home Trends" websites.

  3. Step 3

    Send your cookware to Dupont for professional resurfacing. Check the link below to find a resurfacing center near you.

  4. Step 4

    Bear in mind that once the pan gets to the condition of needing repair, most people feel it is not worthwhile to resurface it. Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) suggests sending it to the manufacturer for repair but cautions this may be expensive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only use plastic utensils when cooking with Teflon-coated pans and do not use harsh scouring pads for cleaning or place in the dishwasher.
  • Purchase cookware that is more modern in technology—such as Silverstone.
  • The flaking coating of Teflon pans is a health hazard when ingested. It is not advisable to continue using the older Teflon pans. Teflon reportedly causes cancer.
  • Do not recycle Teflon pans to use as pet food dishes. The flaking of the Teflon is hazardous to pets as well as humans.
  • Teflon puts off noxious fumes when heated on high heat (above 500 degrees).
