How to Multitask While on a Treadmill

One of the reasons many people don't exercise is because they don't have enough time. But, if you can find ways to multi-task, or get more than one thing done at once, your workout won't seem like a loss of an half-hour, hour or however long you exercise.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Make sure your secondary task is something that is actually achievable. You obviously aren't going to be able to do aerobics and cure cancer at the same time. But you will be able to jog on a treadmill and catch up on your reading. You could also listen to books on tape, watch television or find dinner ideas in a magazine. If you work out at a gym, bringing a friend along might be a good way to catch up while you burn calories.
Step2
Get the proper equipment. You might need to have a treadmill with a book stand, or purchase an mp3 player with headphones. An added bonus: Your workout won't seem as grueling if you're also doing something you enjoy.
Step3
Develop a plan. Some parts of your work out will be better to multi-task during. If your treadmill routine includes vigorous running, you might want to switch from listening to educational material to music to get you in the mood. Power walking or light jogging are usually better for doing any sort of reading.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide to do something on the treadmill that requires writing, be sure to glance over your notes while the material is still fresh in your head after you finish your work out so that you can fix any writing that's hard to read.

on 5/29/2008 Another great thing about treadmills is you can modify them into a treadmill desk and walk all day if you want. The best I have seen is called TrekDesk and you can view this treadmill desk at www.trekdesk.com. Imagine finishing your day and you have burned 900-1600 calories, feel energized and ready for your free time at home.
