The Rastafari, often identified by their long dreadlocks and adornment of bright colors, originated in Jamaica as a protest cult in the 1930s. While they hold an iconic status in Western popular culture, their religion consists of definite beliefs and strict practices. Membership into the Rastafari was once exclusive to those of African decent, but many ethnic groups have adapted their own versions of Rasta.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Research the history of the movement, and read the writings of Marcus Garvey and the Ethiopian Orthodox canon. Garvey is regarded as a prophet, and the canon contains the Rasta Biblical foundations.
Step2
Recognize the divinity of Haile Selassie I, the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, former Ethiopian monarch and successor to the Solomic lineage. The Rasta believe that he is of divine origin and was sent to enact the Messianic fulfillment of the Scripture.
Step3
Grow dreadlocks if possible. Many Rastafari wear dreadlocks as a sign of devotion. The dreadlocks have their roots in the Nazarite vow of the Old Testament.
Step4
Smoke marijuana where it is permitted. Marijuana is believed to have mystical properties of divine revelation. It's not used as a recreational substance for a Rasta, but as a vehicle for opening the mind to spiritual truth.
Step5
Listen to Reggae music, especially that of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, the Rastafarians and Culture. All of them are expressed Rastafari. Many Rastas believe Bob Marley to be a prophet.
Step6
Understand that colonial domination is the legacy of Babylon. The Rasta world view divides the forces of good in evil into Babylon versus the oppressed; the latter is understood in terms of slavery and colonization. But, like all dualities, they can be interpreted to fit your everyday life. Next time your boss gives you a hard time, call him a Babylonian oppressor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smoking marijuana is illegal in many countries, and the United States doesn't recognize the religious right of the Rastafari to use this substance. If you insist on smoking it, take a pilgrimage to a country where it is legal.
