How to ID a Swimmable Pond

There is nothing like swimming in a cool pond on a hot summer day. But before you go diving into that tempting body of water you really should make sure the pond is swimmable so you don't become ill from potentially bacteria laden or otherwise contaminated water. Here are some things to look for before you jump in.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Check around to be sure the pond is not receiving runoff from storm drains and/or septic systems. If it is, steer clear. Pesticides and fecal contamination are strong possibilities, and not worth the risk. Ask neighboring families about their septic systems. This may seem intrusive but it is important when identifying a swimmable pond. Sometimes there can be hidden sources of contamination due to old or forgotten systems.
Step2
Be sure the pond is not being used by livestock. Fecal contamination can cause a host of unpleasant and dangerous illnesess, including deadly E. coli. If there are livestock with possible access it is not a swimmable pond.
Step3
Make sure the pond has an adequate water supply, meaning there is a steady exchange of water. A stagnant pond can harbor a lot of illness-inducing algae and bacteria. If the water has an excess of algae buildup it probably has been left to go wild, and you should steer clear.
Step4
Do a bacteria test before making your final decision. Take a sample of the water to a lab, and have it tested for contaminants such as pesticides and dangerous bacteria. This may delay your fun for a moment, but it is worth it, particularly if you have small children as they are more susceptible to certain illnesses.
