The Air Force expects a military member to financially supports his spouse while they are separated. The Air Force views a couple married until a court-ordered divorce has been issued. At that point, support is determined by the court. While there is no set formula that dictates what a "reasonable" amount is, there are a few ways to ensure you get the support you need while waiting for the divorce settlement .

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Realize that the Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard do not have the authority to order a military member to pay her spouse or child support. The policies established by the Air Force simply serve as guidelines for counseling service members.
Step2
Contact the service member to arrange a spousal and or child support agreement. Make a copy of the agreement in writing. If it is not possible to reach the service member, contact his commander for assistance in locating him. Have the service member's name, social security number, rank and any other information related to his current commission.
Step3
Put your request to the commander in writing. While proof of support payments are not usually required, a commander is required to obtain proof of payments from a service member once a complaint has been filed by a family member. Include banking information such as complete account information where you want funds deposited to make this step more efficient.
Step4
Include a copy of a court order if one has been issued.
Step5
Send your request by return receipt requested to ensure it is received by the correct personnel.
Step6
Follow up if you have not heard from the service member's commanding officer within three weeks.
Step7
Understand that failing to support family members during a separation may result in the loss of Basic Allowance for Housing. It also may adversely affect one's military career. In extreme cases, it may result in disciplinary action when a failure to pay results in negative attention directed at the Air Force.
