The open oceans, inlets and islands of Florida make for some of the best sailing grounds in the US. Florida offers sunny skies, reliable winds and a friendly boating culture that encourages local and tourist boaters to enjoy themselves on the water. If you are looking to sail in Florida, there are a few things you should know. Follow these steps to get started.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Know Florida's boating regulations and right-of-way laws. Sailing is a fun and carefree activity but it demands a level of attention and respect for local law. Check out Florida's right-of-way regulations to make sure they aren't different from what you know. Also, be aware that it is unlawful to sail a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol while in Florida's waters.
Step2
Understand the effects of sea breeze. Florida's peninsular geography makes sailing in the state an interesting meteorological experience. Sea breeze occurs when the ocean pushes wind onto the shore. Since Florida is exposed to sea breeze from both sides of the peninsula, the counter-directional winds often meet and create sudden and violent storms. Learn about Florida's sea breeze so you know how to predict patterns and deal with weather eventualities.
Step3
Head to the Keys. The Florida Keys are an archipelago of more than one thousand islands off of the coast of Florida. Sailing in the Keys is truly world class experience. Hopping from island to island will let you enjoy a few hours or days of sailing followed up by a stop on a fascinating and well-supplied island for a little shore leave.
Step4
Be weather wary. Florida is the epicenter of the Hurricane Alley and usually bears at least part of the brunt of any major storm on the eastern seaboard. Being smart about the weather in Florida is essential to having a pleasant and safe boating experience. Even if you're planning on a short day sail, you should still check the weather reports and keep your eye on the horizon to look out for unusual weather.
