Diamonds are the ultimate Valentine's Day gift. Whether they are on a ring, a pendant or another piece of jewelry, they are sure to be appreciated. Diamonds can be complicated to buy; however, with many factors contributing to the value and beauty of each diamond.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for the best quality diamond for the amount you have to spend. Diamonds are valued according to their cut, color, carat weight and clarity. Ask a jeweler to show you a range of colors in your price range. Diamonds with more color will be less expensive than clearer diamonds.

  2. Step 2

Choose a cut that will complement the setting and celebrate the occasion. Many people choose a heart-cut diamond for Valentine's Day. The heart cut is cut mainly for its shape, but the facets also increase the sparkle in the stone.

  3. Step 3

Buy your diamond with the setting in mind. A larger carat diamond is needed for a pendant or stud earrings. Smaller carat diamonds can be set in any piece of jewelry for a lot less money. Designing the ring, necklace or earrings creates a nice personal touch.

  4. Step 4

Get the proper papers with your diamond, which will include a map of the inclusions, flaws, that the diamond contains. Take a look at the diamond with a jeweler's loupe to make sure the diamond they sold you is the diamond you are receiving.

Another idea about buying a diamond is to buy a loose diamond and let her pick out the setting. That way she has fun shopping for it and you don't get blamed for buying the wrong size or style. It's a win-win.
