How to Reverse Roll Window Tint Film

Tint your back windshield and say goodbye to squinty-eyed back seat passengers and scalding-hot seat buckles. A reverse roll tinting technique can preserve the color of a vehicle's interior and, ultimately, the value of a car. Save money and use window tint film instead of replacing a back window with chemically treated glass.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Window tint film (based on window size)
    • Squeegee
    • Hard straight edge
    • Roller (length of window)
    • Spray bottle with soapy water
    • Knife
      • 1

Clean the back window thoroughly with a clean towel and soap and water. Remove all dirt and debris.

      • 2

Cut the film a little larger than the size of the window; leave a 2-inch overlap on all sides.

      • 3

Lay the film onto the window with the tint side up. Peel back 1 foot of the clear lining from the tint film slowly and mist lightly with a water-soap solution. Use one drop of dish soap only in the solution. Touch the outer edges of the tint side of the film only if necessary. Fingerprints can be left behind.

Roll the film onto the roller starting from the side and stopping just before the 1-foot section that was peeled back. Mist the window with the water and soap solution.

      • 5

Position the roller onto the window with the 1-foot section just slightly overlapping the window edge. The tint side of the 1-foot section should be laying on the window now. The water solution prevents the exposed film from immediately sticking to the glass and allows for re-positioning if necessary.

Slowly roll the film off of the roller with one hand and peel off clear liner with opposite hand. Stop to re-mist the window if necessary. Position the film onto the window.

      • 7

Work the water and air bubbles out from underneath the film using a squeegee. Trim off excess film, leaving a few millimeters of overlap to force into the window corners. Flatten with squeegee and a hard straight edge. The film shrinks a bit when dry.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Remove the window from the vehicle and then apply the tint film for a more exact fit. Review vehicle manual for window removal instructions.

    • Stubborn water bubbles do evaporate in a few days. Remove all air bubbles with squeegee.

    • Don't apply tint film in winter months.
