Polymyalgia is an inflammatory condition that causes severe discomfort in the muscles and joints. The symptoms of polymyalgia, also known as polymyalgia rheumatica, can last anywhere from a few weeks to several years. If you have this disorder, you should seek out treatment options.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up an appointment with a rheumatologist. A specialist can give you the best advice on how to treat polymyalgia.

  2. Step 2

Take an over the counter pain reliever. Aspirin can help treat muscle pain. Ibuprofen pain relievers are also particularly effective.

  3. Step 3

Ask about a prescription for a medication containing cortisone. Cortisone can relieve the inflammation that is caused by polymyalgia. This reduces the amount of stiffness and pain experienced by the patient.

  4. Step 4

Try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Exercise may feel uncomfortable at first, but in the long run it reduces the amount of pain that you feel from polymyalgia.

  5. Step 5

Add a daily vitamin supplement to your diet. You should eat well and make sure that you get enough vitamin D and calcium. A diet high in these nutrients can prevent any possible complications that can arise from polymyalgia.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stomach problems, such as ulcers, have been linked to the long term use of over the counter pain medications. Consult a doctor before using these medications.
  • Don't put strain on muscles affected by polymyalgia. Although you should exercise to treat the disorder, you need to use caution during strenuous activities.
