Step 1
Locate stats for the player that you wish to analyze. You can analyze a specific game, a specific season or a player's entire career. The turnover ratio works for any sample size. Obviously, the larger the sample size, the more useful the statistic.
-
Step 2
Find the following stats for a player: turnovers, assists, field goals attempted and free throws attempted. Make sure you get each stat from the same sample size. For example, if you are going to analyze a single game, each stat should be from the game in question.
-
Step 3
Multiply free throws attempted by 0.44. Add to that number the total number of field goal attempts.
-
Step 4
Take the number from the previous step and add the number of turnovers and the number of assists. The resulting number is known as the total number of possessions.
-
Step 5
Multiply the number of turnovers by 100. Then take the resulting number, and divide it by the total number of possession. This final number is the turnover ratio. Round the number to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.
-
Step 6
Compare the player's turnover ratio to similar players to figure out how each player stacks up in terms of taking care of the ball.
